Lake Forest and the North Shore

The City of Lake Forest is is a vibrant, prestigious community nestled along the western shore of Lake Michigan.  It is located just 30 miles north of downtown Chicago.   As one of the largest Lake Forest Placecommunities on the North Shore, it has a population of more than 20,000 and encompasses 19 square miles. The Village of Lake Bluff is located just to the north of Lake Forest.  A number of prominent communities lie south of the city, including Highland Park, Glencoe, Winnetka, Kenilworth, and Wilmette, to name a few.

Lake Forest was laid out as a town in 1857 and chartered in 1861.  The community was founded around its college, and it served a dual purpose – to support the establishment of church-related educational institutions and to serve as a stop for travelers making their way south to Chicago.  Since then, Lake Forest has become home to many prestigious businesses and residents alike.  In fact, the community is well-recognized for the notable people who have chosen to call Lake Forest their home.

Market SquareOne of the most alluring features of Lake Forest is its natural beauty.  Along with scenic Lake Michigan to the east, the North Shore area is home to an abundance of parks and nature preserves.  Its picturesque street plan takes into account the area’s many natural features, such as ravines and lake bluffs, instead of reflecting the more typical gridiron plan of many cities.

This natural beauty of the area is complemented by a substantial number of impressive country estates.  Indeed, Lake Forest is famous for the quality and character of its architecture.  Well-known architects who contributed to its architectural landscape include Henry Ives Cobb, Charles Frost and Howard Van Doren Shaw.  Shaw, incidentally, designed the historic Market Square, which was listed on the National Register of Historical Sites in 1978. A quaint commercial area situated in downtown Lake Forest, Market Square provides a mixture of retail and professional services, and restaurants.

Lake Forest CollegeThe Lake Forest community offers superb educational opportunities.  It is home to many excellent schools, both public and private, as well as Lake Forest College and the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Lake Forest is also a major business center, with several national and multi-national corporate headquarters located in or near the city.  Known Halas Hallthroughout Chicagoland and beyond, Halas Hall continues to serve as the training facility and headquarters for the Chicago Bears.
